Sustainable Alloys for Extreme Environments Laboratory

We are a research group in the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, dedicated to understanding and engineering alloys that operate at the limits of thermomechanical performance — from aerospace turbine components to next-generation structural materials.
The SAFEE group was established at IIT Kharagpur in 2026, bringing together expertise in high-temperature deformation physics, advanced electron microscopy, and alloy microstructure design. We work on materials that are pushed to their physical and chemical limits — and try to understand exactly why they succeed or fail.
Our approach is integrative: we combine precision characterization tools — including controlled Electron Channeling Contrast Imaging (ECCI) and EBSD — with mechanical testing and thermomechanical processing experiments to build a comprehensive picture of alloy behavior from the atomic to the component scale.
We are committed to open, collaborative science and actively seek partnerships with national laboratories, industry, and international research groups.
